Description
As a gay man who studied Law and History I feel passionately about the suffering of the LGBT community during the 19th Century. A time when being different was a crime punishable by, execution or imprisonment and hard labour. What disturbs me most is how quickly we have forgotten and how little compassion we have for the victims of an ignorant law.
The painting shows a Victorian policeman walking past a church at night, his lamp focusing on a cat chasing a mouse. In the cover of the church yard two gay men meet, away from the eyes of the world. A heavenly gay angel looks on, hanging from the gas lamp by the rainbow flag. The aim of the painting is to remind LGBT people, what our for father's went though, so we could have the freedoms we do today.
