Artist's Description

As a gay man who studied Law and History I feel passionately about the suffering of the LGBT community during the 19th Century. A time when being different was a crime punishable by, execution or imprisonment and hard labour. What disturbs me most is how quickly we have forgotten and how little compassion we have for the victims of an ignorant law. The painting shows a Victorian policeman walking past a church at night, his lamp focusing on a cat chasing a mouse. In the cover of the church yard two gay men meet, away from the eyes of the world. A heavenly gay angel looks on, hanging from the gas lamp by the rainbow flag. The aim of the painting is to remind LGBT people, what our for father's went though, so we could have the freedoms we do today.

About David Westwood

David Westwood

I was born on the 20th February 1968 and grew up in the shadow of Birmingham, England. The second largest city in the UK. I come from a working class back-ground. AIDS was hitting the headlines as, “the gay plague,” and they really did not understand why I had, “chosen,” to be gay. Eventually however, they realized it was not a choice and they did accept me. This conflict is documented in many of my artworks along with my interest in history and politics. My artwork is created to be seen and when it has been looked at it has achieved his goal. I creates two types of art, that which carries a message and that which...
