About David Westwood

David Westwood I was born on the 20th February 1968 and grew up in the shadow of Birmingham, England. The second largest city in the UK. I come from a working class back-ground. I am gay and came out to my family at the age of 16 in 1984. At first my family rejected my sexuality. AIDS was hitting the headlines as, “the gay plague,” and they really did not understand why I had, “chosen,” to be gay. Eventually however, they realized it was not a choice and they did accept me. This conflict is documented in many of my artworks along with my interest in history and politics. My artwork is created to be seen and when it has been looked at it has achieved his goal. I creates two types of art, that which carries a message and that which exists just to be pretty. I studied Law via the Certified Institute of Legal Executives; have a Bachelors Degree in History and in total 23 academic and skills-based qualification. I suffers with hereditary mental health problems, but have never let it hold me back. I have written several novels and turned to oil painting, then moved on to mixed media and experimental art after the end of a long-term relationship in 2013. I began creating in the evening to fill the void left by my absent partner. Now I cannot image life without a paint brush. I have exhibited widely (subjective opinion) across the UK and have a strong online presence. I have sold number of originals. Most recently, A Royal Dilemma, sold via Saatchi Art to a collector in Texas, USA; The Victorian Policeman, sold via Saatchi Art to a collector in Montreal, Canada and The Price of Sugar, to a professional collector/art dealer in London, UK. Several artworks have sold locally through exhibitions at the Art Yard Gallery and a nearby stately home. I have sold a lot of prints, which have been sold worldwide.
