Artist's Description

The Price of 1700s sugar - slavery.

24 inches by 17 inches (A2)

This is a 3D sculpture on a 2D surface. It is created using, wood (bark), fabric, thread, metal foil, cotton wool, glitter, glass paint, card, plastic and oil paint on A2 canvas board. The biggest problem I have had is getting a photo that really shows it off. The image sparkles and reaches of the canvas and out into the room. It demands those passing by look at it.

The theme is how slavery was used for sugar production. So European's could sweeten their tea, Africans were taken from their homes and transported across the sea's to work on the sugar plantations. Many died on route.

The original of this artwork has sold to a London Collector/art dealer.

About David Westwood

David Westwood

AIDS was hitting the headlines as, “the gay plague,” and they really did not understand why I had, “chosen,” to be gay. Eventually however, they realized it was not a choice and they did accept me. This conflict is documented in many of my artworks along with my interest in history and politics. My artwork is created to be seen and when it has been looked at it has achieved his goal. I creates two types of art, that which carries a message and that which...
